Dürr Dental compressor servicing: intervals, parts and common faults
Dürr compressors are well built and, looked after properly, will run quietly in the background for years. Most of the failures we attend are not really equipment failures at all — they are maintenance that quietly stopped happening. Here is what a proper service covers, how often it is genuinely needed, and the faults we see most often in UK practices.
How often does a Dürr compressor need servicing?
Plan on an annual service. Dürr specifies that the compressor filter is changed once per year, and an annual visit gives an engineer the opportunity to carry out the wider checks the unit needs at the same time.
That covers maintenance. It does not cover your legal obligation.
Servicing and pressure vessel inspection are two different things. A compressor service is maintenance. A pressure vessel inspection (PVI) is a statutory requirement under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, carried out to the schedule set by your Written Scheme of Examination. Practices regularly assume the annual service includes the PVI — then find out at CQC inspection that it did not. Check your contract states both explicitly.

Register the unit: two extra years of warranty
Dürr operate a product registration scheme, and their own wording is direct about it: “Register your products and benefit from an additional two years of warranty extension.”
It is a one-off task and easy for it to fall between the installer and the practice at handover. If nobody did it, nobody tends to find out until a fault arrives several years later — at which point the two years are the difference between a warranty claim and an invoice.

What a proper Dürr service covers
A service that consists of a visual check and a signature is not a service. On a Dürr unit, the visit should include the following as a minimum.

You should receive written documentation of everything carried out. That paperwork is not administrative overhead — it is the evidence you present at inspection, and without it the work effectively did not happen as far as a regulator is concerned.
Membrane drying: what it does and does not need
Tornado units are available with a membrane drying unit, and it is worth knowing what that means for maintenance.
Dürr state that, unlike conventional adsorption dryers, it is not necessary to change the drying agent in a membrane drying unit — annual replacement of the filter is the only maintenance the drying unit requires.
The practical value of knowing this is diagnostic. If you are getting moisture at the point of use on a membrane-dried unit, the drying stage needs testing properly rather than parts being swapped at it. Check your own model documentation to confirm which drying arrangement you have, as it varies across the range.

Common faults we attend
Moisture in the air lines
The single most common call, and almost always traceable to condensate. Draining the condensate is the most frequently skipped maintenance task in dental practice — it takes under a minute and it is nobody's named job, so it stops happening.
Moisture matters more than most practices realise. It corrodes internal valves and components from the inside, and wet air is not what you want reaching a surgery. Left alone it shortens the life of the compressor and everything downstream of it.
If draining daily has not cleared it, stop there. Persistent moisture means the drying stage needs testing properly, and that is an engineer's job — it is not something to keep swapping parts at.
Not building pressure
Usually one of: a clogged intake filter restricting airflow, worn head valves, a failing check valve, a leak somewhere in the system, or a pressure regulator that has drifted out of specification. A leak check across the pipework is the fastest way to narrow it down.
Running constantly or cycling frequently
A compressor that never seems to stop is either being asked for more air than it can supply, or it is losing air as fast as it makes it. On a unit that has coped fine for years, suspect a leak before you suspect the compressor. If the practice has genuinely grown — an extra surgery, or a chair that was previously little used now running full days — the unit may simply be undersized for its current duty.
Getting louder
Worth taking seriously rather than tolerating. A change in noise or vibration typically means bearings or the head, and both are considerably cheaper to address before they fail than after. If it has changed noticeably in the last few months, get it looked at while it is still a repair rather than a replacement.
When repair stops making sense
There comes a point on any unit where continuing to repair it stops being the sensible use of money. The rule of thumb we would apply honestly: if a major component rebuild is going to cost more than 50–60% of a comparable replacement, replace it.
Beyond that, it is a judgement call on the specific machine — its history, how hard it has worked, and what is actually failing. We would rather look at it and tell you before you spend the money than after.

How often does a Dürr Dental compressor need servicing?
Annually. Dürr specifies a filter change once per year, and the annual visit covers the wider checks. Your pressure vessel inspection interval is separate and is set by your Written Scheme of Examination.
Does a Dürr Tornado need its desiccant changed?
Dürr state that a membrane drying unit does not need its drying agent changed, unlike a conventional adsorption dryer. Confirm which arrangement your model has.
Is the pressure vessel inspection included in a service?
Not automatically. They are separate pieces of work with separate certification. Confirm both are in your contract.
Can I extend the warranty on Dürr equipment?
Dürr state that registering your products gives an additional two years of warranty extension. Worth confirming it was done for yours.
Can we service the compressor ourselves?
You can and should handle the daily tasks — draining condensate above all. The annual service and the pressure vessel inspection need a competent engineer, and the PVI must be carried out by a competent person as defined under PSSR 2000.
